Generali Belgium and Wielemans House
The Generali group was created in Trieste in 1831.
A leading European insurance company, it is present today in more than
50 countries on five continents. Thanks to its high-level financial capacity and its great international experience, the Generali group is able to guarantee know-how and state of the art service in all areas of insurance and financial products.
The Italian Generali group has been present in Belgium since 1901. While active in the world of insurance, the Generali Belgium Company is also very present in the real estate sector or through its Generali Belgium Invest branch.
The Company has also decided to follow in Belgium the tradition of Assicurazioni Generali, whose actions to protect art and culture in all its forms are numerous in Italy.
1997 was the thirty-year anniversary of the Louise Tower where Generali Belgium headquarters are located. That year, the company wanted to show its attachment to the Brussels Region and the City of Brussels by two important acts of sponsorship, thereby contributing to highlighting the cultural heritage of Brussels: purchasing and restoring the old Art Deco town house located at 14 rue Defacqz which formerly belonged to the Wielemans family, and immediately assigning the building for the activities of the non-profit organization art media, which organizes international level exhibitions.
Generali Belgium received the Caïus "Special Jury Prize" from the Prométhéa Foundation in November 1997, the most prestigious prize for cultural sponsorship, for these two actions.
In 2001 Generali Belgium, was amongst several to recieve the
EUROPA NOSTRA national heritage prize for its restoration of
the Hôtel Wielemans, in particular for its scientific and
technical work in the conservation of materials used in this rare
example of the Spanish art deco style".
In the context of the Brussels Region's, the actions of Generali Belgium must be placed among actions to refurbish public areas, improve the environment and the creation of cultural areas, elements that are indispensable to favor a quality habitat which the region and the city greatly need.
Through the renovation of this prestigious building and by the assignment of this building to high-level cultural activities, the GENERALI BELGIUM Company has contributed to enhancing the cultural heritage of the Brussels-Capital Region and in particular to increasing the value and animation of the well-known Louise quarter.
